More than 250 Years of Brewing History in Bruges

The Van Houtryve brewing dynasty has played a central role in Bruges' brewing tradition since 1765. It all began with Pierre-Jacques Van Houtryve, who ran a farmhouse brewery in Loppem. In 1825, his son received official permission from the States of Flanders to brew within the city walls of Bruges. Thus, Brewery Den Os was born.

On the eve of the First World War, three members of the Van Houtryve family were each running their own brewery: Den Os, La Marine, and Ten Ezele. At that time, Bruges had no fewer than 34 active breweries – a historical peak. It was during this golden age that the brewery’s flagship beer, Bourgogne des Flandres, came into being: a classic West Flemish red-brown ale, known for its balance and character.

Despite the devastation of two world wars and the growing popularity of pilsner beers, Bourgogne des Flandres retained its place in the Belgian beer scene. Brewery Den Os ultimately closed in 1957, but the story didn’t end there. In 2016, a modern microbrewery opened on Kartuizerinnenstraat, just 50 meters from the former La Marine site. Today, Bourgogne des Flandres is once again brewed in the heart of Bruges, overlooking the canals in a setting that perfectly blends history and innovation.
